Is It My Possible My Doctor Is Getting Some Kind of Kickback?

Question by whenuwish: Is it my possible my doctor is getting some kind of kickback?
I know they say it’s impossible but let me explain. My little 4 month old is getting a slightly misshapen head. It’s not noticeable, noticeable, only slightly.

Our doctor told us we had to go to a special place way in Dallas and since it’s cosmetic our insurance company probably won’t want to cover it.

Okay. We found out this place was supposed to be one of the best places in the world. She wanted us to go visit there weekly too. It’s at least a 6 hour drive and if this is the best place the price is bound to be highly outrageous.

To afford it we basically would have to sell our house and move into an apartment. Literally.

Well we called up some different places in Texas (which is where we live) that did the same thing. They thought what our doctor said was outrageous and they could help us without weekly visits.

It’s still expensive but now it’s possible without selling our house. So why would she recommend such an elite and expensive place when we didn’t really need it? Especially at just now 4 months, there is still time to correct itself with a basic helmet.

Are me and my husband out of our mind or is there something going on?

Say your child has enormous musical talent rather than a head that wants to be not quite the right shape. Your doctor happens to think his patients’ kids deserve the very best, so he recommends the Eastman School of Music, even though it’s a very long way away. You’d have to sell your home and get an apartment thousands of miles away for your child to receive musical instruction there.

However, there’s a very nice woman down the block who gives both piano and violin lessons. She’s a former musician, and very patient, and clearly adores working with her young students.

It’s your decision, as a parent, to decide which is better for your child, the world-class music school or the nice lady down the street. Either can help your child develop his or her talent, but one clearly offers better instruction.

you’re speaking of referral fees paid to physicians by specialists for their referrals. doctors also have frequent “kickback ” deals from drug companies/suppliers for prescribing certain drugs/medications, and devices to their patients, on a priority basis. the reason is financial reward, not the patient’s real need. in texas, the university of houston, medical center is one of the top listed facilities in the country. you can have your childs medical history and x-rays inspected before any treatment recommendations are given for a consultation fee, that would save you the cost of a full diagnostic workup from scratch.. your childs skull has several plates and connective tissues that are still soft, to allow for growth expansion. using helmets of different sizes and adjustments, while growth is progressing is a widely accepted practice. good luck.
