Even in Her Prime, Why Was Whitney Houston’s Great Voice Wasted on Rubbish Songs?
Question by : Even in her prime, why was Whitney Houston’s great voice wasted on rubbish songs?
Other than “I have nothing” her songs are very bad. “I have nothing” is the only truly great Whitney houston song. You would think with all those great songwriters, they would have come up with better songs for her than “I wanna dance with somebody”(so generic), “I will always love you”(yawn), “Greatest love of all”(yawn), etc.
Other great female singers like Shirley Bassey, Dusty Sprinfeld, Aretha Franklin and many others had much better and cooler songs than Whitney houston. “Son of a Preacher” is so cool, and “Goldfinger” is amazingly cool too.
Whitney’s songs are too boring and emotional and even her happy and upbeat songs are just boring and generic songs about dancing with somebody or the annoying “I’m your baby tonight”. What a waste of an amazing voice.
Even Whitney’s contemporaries in the 80s had cooler and more interesting songs than Whitney – ie Patti Labelle, Tina Turner and many others. Why oh why did they make Whitney sing such boring, generic and uninteresting songs.

No I think that her current songs are boring. I don’t know if its from just my generation (which is today’s) lackluster music or that her voice suffered alot due to her drug abuse, but I think her early ones are classic because not just her voice but the way they were compose and the message that they sent. Now you have to consider the time they were produce in (in the 80’s and early 90’s) and what the music industry was marketing her as (this American princess) so they were giving her songs regarding those issues and or something related to those issues. Now if you count the 90’s she was keeping up will the times. Plus you have to take into consideration the music label as a whole such as they want her to sing these songs because its part of their market scheme to make money. Even if she didn’t want to sing them she has to keep that persona because of her contract with the label. However she did become bigger than Patti Labelle, Tina Turner, and those others because of those songs.
